Embedding an RSS feed into a blog post
I have been experimenting with various methods and plugins for embedding RSS feeds into blog posts. Not surprisingly, there are a number of ways to accomplish this and plenty of plugins and widgets to help. At some point, I would like to hack together my own scripts for doing this, but for now I am relying on the efforts of others. One such application is FirstRSS, a nifty RSS aggregator plugin for Wordpress developed by Chris Hatcher. Ultimately, it was his solution that I preferred as it was the cleanest and simplest to use. It also comes packaged with ‘SideRSS’, a script for embedding RSS feeds into a sidebar/template that is just as easy to use. FirstRSS and SideRSS are offered under open source GPL and would make an excellent starting point for anyone looking to build their own RSS aggregator. One little glitch I’m seeing, though, is the ‘powered by’ link for the FirstRSS plugin is displayed at the bottom of the post, rather than the bottom of the feed. This is probably easy enough to change/fix (and may not be an issue for most users).

What to say when there is nothing to say?
Probably the most common statement found on the millions of blogs floating around the WWW is (and I paraphrase) “Forgive me followers for I have sinned… It has been umpteen days since my last post.” This is usually followed by a number of excuses that range anywhere from “My dog died and he was the [...]

Rage Against the Machine: Apple?s Fall From Grace
OK, I have to win some kind of award for most inflammatory (and misleading) post title for this one. Like many of you, I have been reading the numerous posts (see links below) following the anti-Flash position Steve Jobs presented at a recent Apple shareholder meeting. I had considered writing about it, [...]
Back from FITC Amsterdam 2008
Returned from FITC Amsterdam a few days ago and finally feel like I’ve recovered from the 9 hour time difference (among other things). Definitely had a good time and learned a few things I’ll likely apply in future projects. Specifically, the Papervision3D workshop, though a bit disorganized, was a nice precursor to P3D development. I [...]
Revisiting the Mozilla framework for RIA development
A while back I wrote about the potential of the Mozilla framework as a platform for RIA development. Today, I found the first of what promises to be an interesting series of articles from Ben Longoria over at InsideRIA. He mentions the (relatively) new offering from Mozilla Labs - Prism (formerly ‘WebRunner’) - which attracted [...]
Modeselektor is Tzzzight!
My eMusic subscription finally refreshed and was able to download Modeselektor’s ‘Happy Birthday!’ album. Track 11 - ‘The Dark Side of the Sun featuring Puppetmastaz’ - yeah, it’s like that.
I know what I did last summer? swimming with the fishes.

Palm introduces Linux-powered Folēo
In case you missed the announcement earlier today… amidst the hubbub from Google (’Gears’) and Microsoft (’Surface’), Palm finally introduced the device so many have speculated about in recent months. As it turns out, this new device dubbed ‘Palm Folēo’ is a mobile companion not only for the Trēo smartphone, but other smartphones as well. [...]
The Silverlight Installation Experience
So, this is the second part of a 2 part series describing my attempts to install the newest runtime/client technologies from Adobe and Microsoft - Apollo and Silverlight. Yesterday, in part one, I detailed my somewhat difficult, but ultimately successful, installation of Apollo. Today, I will do the same as I attempt to install Silverlight. As [...]
I have included some of the other approaches I tried (below). However, as you can see, these techniques add features and advertising that tend to clutter the presentation. Sometimes (usually), simpler is better.
